What is CBD?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a compound found in cannabis, much like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Although hemp and marijuana are both varieties of cannabis, they are distinct plants. CBD is derived from hemp, which is cultivated to contain high levels of CBD and minimal THC.

The primary difference between CBD and THC is that THC is intoxicating, while CBD is not. Both compounds influence the brain, making them psychoactive, but CBD does not produce the “high” that THC does. It is widely accepted that CBD does not impair decision-making or affect one’s ability to drive safely.

What is Full Spectrum CBD?

Full spectrum CBD is extracted from hemp and includes a range of cannabinoids beyond just CBD, including small amounts of THC. It also contains other natural elements of the hemp plant, such as terpenes, essential vitamins, fatty acids, and proteins. This holistic profile is why full spectrum CBD is sometimes referred to as whole-plant CBD extract. As Laura Freeman, founder of Laura’s Mercantile and Laura’s Homestead Alternatives, says, “We are organic farmers, and we stay as close to the plant as possible.”

Full Spectrum CBD vs. CBD Isolate

Unlike full spectrum CBD, CBD isolate contains only pure CBD, with all other plant components removed. This means no THC, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, or proteins are present in CBD isolate. While CBD isolate may lack the synergistic benefits of full spectrum CBD, it ensures zero THC content.

Will Full Spectrum CBD Oil Make Me High?

CBD products, when taken at recommended dosages, will not make you “high.” Full spectrum CBD oil contains only trace amounts of THC (less than 0.3%), eliminating any risk of intoxication.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Yes, purchasing CBD oil is federally legal, and we ship to all 50 states. The 2018 Farm Bill removed industrial hemp from the DEA’s controlled substances list, provided the hemp contains no more than 0.3% THC. This legislation legalized the production and sale of hemp and its extracts, including CBD. The USDA has affirmed that states cannot interfere with the interstate commerce of hemp or its derivatives.

How much CBD should I take?

CBD, like THC, comes from cannabis. For clarity, hemp and marijuana are separate plants, but they both fall under the broader category of cannabis. CBD is derived from hemp, which are cannabis plants bred to yield high concentrations of CBD and low concentrations of THC.

The main difference between CBD and THC is that THC is intoxicating, whereas CBD is not.

Both compounds are psychoactive in the sense that they both impact the brain, but CBD from hemp will not produce the “high” associated with marijuana and THC. It is generally agreed upon that use of CBD does not affect one’s decision making or, for instance, impair one’s ability to drive safely.

How often should I take CBD oil?

You should take CBD oil daily at a consistent dosage to realize the maximum benefits. Skipping days between doses will reduce the effectiveness. Some people report it can take a few days or even a week for the CBD to build up in their system and relief to set in.

Does the VA prescribe CBD oil?

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran affairs, “VA clinicians may only prescribe medications that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use.” Unfortunately, CBD is not currently regulated by the FDA, and VA physicians are not allowed to prescribe or recommend its use. However, it is important to note that even though the VA will not prescribe CBD oil, veterans who use CBD products will not be denied VA benefits.

Can CBD be used to treat PTSD?

According to the VA, “Veterans, combat soldiers, or other people alike can probably use CBD within an hour of their experience, and significantly decrease the adverse effects of the disorder. This is extremely important because if this is, in fact, the case, CBD oil products can be revolutionary for the military and VA in terms of managing such issues. This is not a ‘solution’ or a “remedy” because CBD won’t make the symptoms go away. However, with regular CBD use, managing the issues of PTSD and post-war anxiety will be more comfortable.” It has also been noted that CBD can be beneficial for active military members in combat. Although not much research has been conducted on this specific idea, it is suggested that taking CBD regularly can help prevent the development of PTSD, or lessen the symptoms of the disorder.  Can CBD Oil Help with Anxiety & PTSD In Veterans? – VA.org

Can CBD be used to treat depression?

When it comes to depression, CBD uses the same mechanism of action as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). According to the scholarly journal CFAH, “CBD has a positive effect on the brain’s serotonin concentrations. Serotonin is a natural neurotransmitter that helps to regulate mood on top of many other things. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression and low mood. While CBD doesn’t directly stimulate the production of serotonin, studies suggest that it may alter the activity of serotonin receptors — helping to process the brain’s existing levels of serotonin more efficiently.” How Does CBD Oil Help PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) Patients? *Military Policy on CBD

To our knowledge, CBD (including hemp-derived CBD) is forbidden for use by any active service member. You may also be required to disclose taking CBD to your doctor if you visit a military medical facility. If you are subject to random drug tests, it is possible for CBD to cause a positive test for THC. Taking that risk is ultimately up to your discretion.
