Does the VA Prescribe CBD Oil?

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran affairs, “VA clinicians may only prescribe medications that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use.” Unfortunately, CBD is not currently regulated by the FDA, and VA physicians are not allowed to prescribe or recommend its use. However, it is important to note that even though the VA will not prescribe CBD oil, veterans who use CBD products will not be denied VA benefits.

VA and Marijuana – What Veterans need to know – Public Health

Currently, the FDA has approved only one cannabis-derived medication, Epidiolex. This drug contains a purified form of CBD and is used to treat seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex in patients aged one year and older. Additionally, the FDA has approved three synthetic cannabis-related medications: Marinol (dronabinol), Syndros (dronabinol), and Cesamet (nabilone). These medications are used for treating nausea related to cancer chemotherapy and anorexia associated with weight loss in AIDS patients.

While the FDA does not currently regulate many cannabis products, they support scientifically-based research into the medicinal uses of cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds. They are committed to encouraging the development of safe, effective, and high-quality cannabis-related drug products, including those containing CBD.

At Laura’s Mercantile, our leadership is actively collaborating with the staff of Kentucky’s congressional delegation, including U.S. Senate Majority Leader John Thune’s team. We are working with the FDA to ensure that Laura’s Homestead Alternatives adheres to all necessary policies and procedures to achieve FDA compliance.

*Military Policy on CBD

To our knowledge, CBD (including hemp-derived CBD) is forbidden for use by any active service member. You may also be required to disclose taking CBD to your doctor if you visit a military medical facility. If you are subject to random drug tests, it is possible for CBD to cause a positive test for THC. Taking that risk is ultimately up to your discretion.
