What is Ivermectin Used For?
The FDA has approved the use of ivermectin to treat a variety of ailments. Primarily, ivermectin is prescribed for parasitic infections, including conditions caused by parasitic worms, hookworms, and whipworms. It is also commonly used to manage strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, two serious parasitic diseases.
Strongyloidiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the roundworm Strongyloides stercoralis. Although rare in the U.S., it is more prevalent in warmer climates. Many people infected with Strongyloides may remain asymptomatic. However, others can experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, rash, hives, vomiting, cough, and weight loss. Untreated, strongyloidiasis can become chronic and lead to severe complications, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.
Onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, is caused by the parasitic worm Onchocerca volvulus. The infection occurs through repeated bites from blackflies, which are typically found near rivers in remote rural areas, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Symptoms include intense itching, skin rashes, and nodules under the skin. In severe cases, it can lead to vision problems and permanent blindness.
In addition to treating these serious conditions, ivermectin is prescribed for more common ailments, including head lice, rosacea, and scabies. These conditions often require a different dosage or application form of the medication.
In veterinary medicine, ivermectin is widely used to treat and prevent parasitic infections in animals. For example, it is effective against certain intestinal worms and external parasites and is commonly prescribed to prevent heartworm disease in dogs.
How Do You Take It?
For humans, ivermectin is typically administered as an oral tablet. It is crucial to take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Avoid increasing the dosage or extending the duration of treatment without medical guidance. In some cases, doctors may recommend a follow-up dose several months or even a year later to ensure complete eradication of the parasitic infection.
In veterinary applications, ivermectin comes in multiple forms, including oral tablets, chewable tablets, topical liquids, pastes, and injectables. The method of administration depends on the type of animal and the specific condition being treated.
Side Effects
Like most medications, ivermectin can cause side effects, ranging from mild to severe. Common side effects in humans include:
Headache
Muscle aches
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Constipation
Loss of appetite
Tenderness in the neck, armpit, or groin area
Rash
Shakiness (tremors)
While most individuals tolerate ivermectin well, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe side effects, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, seizures, or other concerning symptoms.
In animals, ivermectin is generally well-tolerated. However, pet owners should contact their veterinarian if their animal exhibits signs of an adverse reaction, such as upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, dilated pupils, unsteadiness while walking, or appearing dazed.
Alternatives
Another medication used to treat internal parasites is fenbendazole. Studies have been conducted to evaluate its efficacy for certain conditions. Depending on the specific parasite and patient needs, fenbendazole may be considered as an alternative treatment option. Always consult your healthcare provider or veterinarian to determine the most appropriate medication for your situation.
