Understanding Cannabidiol (CBD) in Hemp Plants

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the most abundant compound found in the flower and leaves of hemp plants. It is one of over 100 different cannabinoids that can be extracted from the hemp plant. As a cannabinoid, CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in maintaining various physiological processes.

What Makes CBD Unique?

CBD is specifically classified as a phytocannabinoid, which means it is a cannabinoid that originates from a plant. Unlike endocannabinoids, which are naturally produced within our bodies, phytocannabinoids like CBD come from external sources. Despite this, they can still affect our endocannabinoid system because their molecular structure is similar to that of endocannabinoids.

How Does CBD Work?

The similarity in molecular makeup allows phytocannabinoids to interact with our endocannabinoid system, influencing its activity. This interaction can lead to various therapeutic benefits, making CBD a valuable compound for addressing different health concerns. By altering the activity within the endocannabinoid system, CBD can help regulate pain, inflammation, mood, and other important functions, contributing to overall well-being.

Full Spectrum CBD vs. CBD Isolate: Understanding the Differences

Full Spectrum CBD

Full spectrum CBD is derived from hemp and encompasses a wide range of cannabinoids beyond just CBD. This type of CBD also includes other elements of the hemp plant, such as naturally occurring terpenes, essential vitamins, fatty acids, proteins, and more. Because it contains multiple components from the entire plant, full spectrum CBD is often referred to as whole-plant CBD extract.

Laura Freeman, founder of Laura’s Mercantile and Laura’s Homestead Alternatives, emphasizes the importance of this approach: “We are organic farmers, and we stay as close to the plant as possible.”

CBD Isolate

In contrast, CBD isolate contains only the CBD compound, which is chemically isolated from all other components of the hemp plant. This means that CBD isolates do not contain any traceable amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces a euphoric high. However, isolates are also stripped of other beneficial and nutritional compounds found in full spectrum CBD, such as terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, and proteins.

Understanding the difference between full spectrum CBD and CBD isolate can help you choose the right product for your needs, whether you prefer the holistic approach of full spectrum CBD or the purity of CBD isolate.

5 Key Considerations When Buying CBD Oil

5 Key Considerations When Buying CBD Oil

How to Choose High-Quality CBD with Confidence

Opt for USDA-Certified Organic CBD
When choosing CBD oil, it’s important to select products made from USDA-certified organic hemp. Not all companies claiming to use organic hemp can verify their claims, so look for proof of certification. This ensures the hemp is grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or harmful concentrations of heavy metals. Always ask for USDA certification before purchasing. You can find our certification [here].

Understand the Extraction Process
The method used to extract CBD from hemp affects the quality and purity of the final product. Choose companies that use CO2 extraction, known for its precision and effectiveness in preserving the integrity of the cannabinoids. We partner with a local extractor who utilizes supercritical CO2 extraction, and our Quality Assurance team ensures every batch meets label specifications. Learn more about our extraction process [here].

Know the Type of CBD
Understanding the type of CBD you’re using is critical. Full spectrum CBD includes a range of cannabinoids and plant compounds, staying as close as possible to the natural hemp plant. In contrast, CBD isolate contains only cannabidiol without other beneficial compounds. Our products are full spectrum, designed to maintain the integrity of the plant and provide an authentic farm-to-product experience.

Request Third-Party Testing
The CBD industry lacks consistent regulation, making third-party lab testing an essential step in choosing a reliable product. Look for brands that test every batch through ISO-accredited labs, which check for cannabinoid profiles, CBD concentration, THC levels, pesticides, and microbial contaminants. Customers can view lab results for specific product batches [here].

How To Take Full Spectrum CBD Oil

To take CBD oil using the sublingual method:

1) Fill the dropper provided with your bottle to the 1.0mL line. This is equivalent to one dose.

2) Using the dropper, place the oil under your tongue. Avoid touching the dropper directly to your mouth, as saliva may enter the dropper and your remaining CBD oil when placed back in the bottle. While unlikely, this could cause contamination of the bottle.

3) Hold the oil under your tongue for 45-60 seconds, or until full absorbed. The idea is to avoid swallowing the oil as much as possible, because CBD is not quite as effective if it has to travel through your digestive system.

Repeat this three step process 1-2 times daily at a consistent dosage.
