Dear Friends,
March is women’s history month. As a woman, I’d rather an eon than a month, which we deserve. Still, I ask you to send me a vignette, long or short, about the women who’ve been role models, inspired you, accomplished the impossible, and have improved the well-being of humanity. I’ll get these notes together, summarize and publish them, plus send every person who submits a story a free pack of Laura’s Homestead Alternatives CBD Chocolate, which I’ve come to love.
I’m privileged to live smack in the middle of 5 generations. My grandmothers, born in 1896 and 1904 are still clear to me, my mother, born in 1930, the same. I was born in the early fall of 1957, my daughter in 1984, and her daughter in 2010. So I can see five generations of progress, from voting rights to girl power, accomplishments wide and deep.
My mother was a farmer who broke the gender barrier in cow college. There, dressed in Lilly Pulitzer pants, she stood on a pickle bucket and palpated a cow, checking to see if the bovine was pregnant. I consider myself a farmer and environmentalist who “invented” beef raised naturally without hormones or antibiotics, sold widely in grocery stores in the US and Canada. Now, with my daughter and an excellent group of young people, we are prototyping a new rural economy, and we thank you for being a part.
We have developed exceptional hemp products and a colorful mail-order community connected digitally. But we miss face-to-face, and this summer we’ll open Laura’s Mercantile on Main, bucking trends with a brick-and-mortar store, and plan several events at Mt. Folly, which operates the homestead cabin as a vacation rental.
So come see for yourself why our way of growing hemp is the best, and find out more about the exceptional craftspeople who make our candies and lotions. Watch for emails and social media for invitations, and if you are near Winchester, KY, this Saturday, March 5th, join us for our lecture series at Wildcat Willy’s, where Dr. Chris Begley will speak on his book and relate research regarding the importance of community and skill-building.
Don’t forget to send me stories of women who’ve inspired and accomplished plenty, and I’ll send you chocolate. Now that’s a deal. Let’s talk soon!
