Fenbendazole has been widely available at most large retail chains like PetSmart and Tractor Supply for years. However, it is becoming increasingly hard to locate due to the growing demand for the dewormer.
Where to buy Fenbendazole?
Most stores are experiencing fenbendazole shortages. If they have any in stock, it’s generally small quantities when they aren’t sold out altogether. So, where can you buy fenbendazole?
Luckily, Laura’s Mercantile is now carrying fenbendazole under the brand name Safe-Guard. Safe-guard is created by Merck Animal Health, “a research-driven company that develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of veterinary medicines and services.”
Merck Animal Health markets their products in more than 140 countries, and they also operate a network of manufacturing sites and research and development (R&D) facilities around the world. The product we carry is made in China and formulated in Austria by Merck Animal Health.
What is Fenbendazole?
Fenbendazole (brand names Panacur® and Safe-Guard®) is a medication used to treat various parasites and worms, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms in animals. Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole, a class of microtubule-destabilizing agents that includes albendazole, parbendazole, mebendazole, and flubendazole.
According to the American Kennel Club, “fenbendazole kills parasites by binding to tubulin (a type of protein), which interferes with the parasites’ ability to form microtubules, which combine to form the structure of the worm cells.”
Fenbendazole is recommended for healthy dogs aged six weeks and older and is available in oral granules or as a liquid suspension. If using the liquid form, it is important to measure the dosage carefully.
The typical regimen for fenbendazole in dogs involves administering it once daily for three consecutive days, followed by another round 2-3 weeks later. It is crucial not to skip doses and to give the full recommended dose each time. Do not give more than one dose at once. For optimal absorption, give fenbendazole with food.
You should store your fenbendazole in a tightly closed container at room temperature.
