Dear Friends,
We are almost through with planting here at Mt. Folly, and my mind has turned to next year’s seeds.
This May, to mark the Covid cancellation of the Kentucky Derby and increased demand for milled organic grains, Laura’s Mercantile sent Bloody Butcher corn seeds to our grain customers. During the lockdown, many of my friends started gardening, something I heartily encourage and support.
Laura Freeman’s Heirloom BeansIt’s the end of June, so for the next seven days, we’ll send these free heirloom corn seeds out with any order from the Mercantile. Make sure to get them in the ground right away as the solstice has passed and it is getting late for corn.
Farming takes the long view, and planning for 2021, we’ve planted our heirloom runner beans, these grown from seed I was given by a gardener from New Roads, Louisiana, in 2018. On harvest, we’ll shell them and save them for planting next spring. If all goes well, these seeds are reserved for Laura’s Mercantile customers’ gardens next year. So heritage corn seeds this year; Louisiana runner beans next year.
Two Notable Encounters this Month
Several weeks ago, I had a farm visitor who was smearing CBD on his lips and under his nose before knocking on my front door. Two days later, at a socially-distanced but face-to-face meeting, my accountant told me she’d read on the internet that CBD stops COVID.
Skeptical, several staff members and I poked around, and decided that the source of the behavior and comment was an article pre-published, but not peer reviewed, titled “In Search of Preventative Strategies: Novel Anti-Inflammatory High CBD Cannabis Sativa Extracts Modulate ACE2 Expression in COVID-19 Gateway Tissues.”
I sent the article to an MD and PhD, and both said it was interesting, extremely preliminary, and to read the comments. Thus, I’m breaking a rule of internet marketing and giving you a link which takes you to another website. Download PDF
But do come back! Remember, with any order this week, we’ll send you some heirloom corn seed!
