Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), often known locally as Yellow Root, is named for its glowing yellow roots and is found growing in rich, healthy forest ecosystems. This revered and powerful herbal remedy is harvested from vibrant, abundant stands that have been carefully stewarded for nine generations on the family land of our staff herbalist. Long before that, Indigenous Tribes of the region caretook this precious patch. We are deeply committed to honoring this lineage by ensuring the population of this at-risk Appalachian perennial increases through responsible harvesting and propagation methods.
For every root we dig, we take at least one healthy cutting, including the already-formed bud that will become next year’s spring shoot, and plant it back into an ideal location to ensure we never deplete this precious resource. We also use the whole plant in our extract—roots, stem, and fresh green leaves—capturing the entire spectrum of valued medicinal constituents without wasting a single drop.
What are the Benefits of Goldenseal?
While Goldenseal is often heralded for its use in treating colds and flus, it’s not particularly anti-viral. Instead, its true strength lies in its ability to tone the membranes within our respiratory and digestive tracts, making it a valuable ally in alleviating symptoms of common respiratory viruses.
Goldenseal shines brightest as an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and antiprotozoal remedy for the digestive system. It’s highly effective against various conditions, including food and water poisoning, such as giardia, making it a superior option compared to many ancient and modern remedies.
In addition to its digestive benefits, Goldenseal promotes healthy biliary functions and alleviates symptoms of general dyspepsia. It’s also widely used as a bacteria-fighting mouth rinse to promote dental health—just remember to dilute the tincture properly to avoid gum irritation from the alcohol-based extract. Our beloved yellow-rooted friend also supports liver health by reducing inflammation and enhancing overall hepatic functionality.
Goldenseal Dosages
While full-dosage applications of this potent herb are best administered under the guidance of a trained herbalist for specific conditions, Goldenseal can also be effectively used in what we call drop-dosage. This method involves taking 1 to 3 drops mixed with a teaspoon of water before meals.
When used as a bitter tonic in this low dosage, Goldenseal can help balance a healthy appetite and support digestive health for various complaints. However, it’s generally recommended to avoid using Goldenseal or to use it cautiously in cases of high blood pressure.
