Initial research indicates that CBD derived from hemp is generally safe for dogs. Most pet owners report minimal to no significant side effects when using CBD products for their pets.
A recent study using the Veterinary Information Network (VIN) surveyed U.S. veterinarians on their knowledge, views, and experiences regarding the use of cannabinoids in treating dogs. The majority of participants expressed support for the use of CBD products in animals.
Are There Side Effects for Dogs Taking CBD?
The most commonly reported side effect of CBD in dogs is mild lethargy, which is not typically harmful. In instances of large single doses (over 300mg of CBD), some cases of diarrhea have been reported. However, these high doses were found to be non-toxic.
How Does CBD Work in Dogs?
While much is known about the bioavailability of CBD in humans, less is understood about its absorption and efficacy in animals. To address this knowledge gap, a recent Phase I study by scientists at Colorado State University explored how CBD is metabolized in 30 purpose-bred beagles. The dogs received one of three CBD formulations: a transdermal cream applied to their ears, oral capsules containing microencapsulated CBD oil, and an oral CBD-infused oil. The dogs were administered either 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg daily for six weeks.
The study monitored plasma concentrations of CBD during the first 12 hours and again after 2, 4, and 6 weeks. The results indicated that absorption was highest with the oral CBD-infused oil. The study concluded that all formulations were well-tolerated, with oral CBD oil being particularly effective for CBD absorption.

How CBD May Help Dogs with Joint Pain and Seizures
As CBD enters dogs’ systems and interacts with them physiologically, a key question arises: “What specific effects and benefits does CBD have on dogs?” Current research suggests that CBD may provide significant relief for conditions such as seizures and pain, particularly arthritis-related discomfort.
A recent study investigated the effects of oral CBD oil on 26 dogs with intractable idiopathic epilepsy, a genetic condition commonly affecting dogs between the ages of 1 and 5, which causes frequent seizures. In this study, 12 dogs were administered CBD-infused oil at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg, while 14 dogs received a placebo, twice daily for 12 weeks. The results indicated a reduction in seizure frequency among the dogs treated with CBD compared to those given the placebo. Moreover, the researchers found a correlation between CBD plasma concentration and reduced seizure frequency.
Another study focused on the impact of CBD on dogs with osteoarthritis demonstrated that CBD significantly alleviated joint pain and increased activity levels in the treated dogs. Owners reported no adverse side effects, highlighting CBD’s safety profile.
Based on the dosing used in these studies, the researchers concluded that administering 2 mg/kg of CBD twice daily has shown in many cases to effectively reduce pain and improve comfort and activity in dogs suffering from osteoarthritis.
CBD Dosage for Dogs: How Much CBD Should Your Dog Have?
Similar to humans, there is no universally agreed-upon dosage for CBD in dogs. However, the osteoarthritis study suggests that a dosage of 2 milligrams of CBD per kilogram of your dog’s weight can have a noticeable impact.
